Hey y’all, welcome to A to ZEE Weekly! I’m Allison, and I’ll be your faithful companion in navigating the sometimes hellish newscape we live in. My hope is to guide you through the world as I see it, while also giving you enough of the objective 411 to understand what’s going on for yourself. Excited to have you on board. It is Monday, January 1st, 2018. Happy New Year! 2017 was a bit of a wild ride, so I thought today would be a good opportunity for a recap.
Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States on January 20th, 2017. As if I needed to remind you, right? As of Mid-november, he has made an average of six false claims every day of his presidency, defaulted on his campaign promise to repeal and replace Obamacare, and passed a tax bill that will benefit the rich while crippling the middle class. A year after his 2016 win, on Election Day 2017, Democrats swept the board with historic wins in even deep-red states. Several months later, the Democrats took another win when Doug Jones won the Alabama Senate Special Election race against Roy Moore, an accused pedophile.
In February, the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead, and the Patriots won the first ever Super Bowl to go into overtime at a score of 34-28. Media coverage of long-term brain injuries in football have picked up this year, with 45% of Americans saying that this issue does not receive enough coverage. Serena Williams won the Australian Open while 8 weeks pregnant with her daughter Alexis. Colin Kaepernick was named GQ’s Man of The Year for his activism efforts both on and off of the football field. He and Sean “Diddy” Combs are in talks to buy the Carolina Panthers at the end of this season when current owner Jerry Richardson puts the team up for sale.
The #MeToo movement shook the country, and especially the entertainment industry, as celebrities such as Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Louis CK, and Brett Ratner were all accused on multiple counts of sexual misconduct. Many women throughout various fields banded together to share their stories and to promise one another that they would no longer allow themselves to be subject to sexual harassment and assault without fighting back.
Additionally, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged, Australia legalized gay marriage, and Mindy Kaling gave birth to a baby girl who has the prettiest name I’ve ever heard– Katherine Kaling. Movies that challenge the currently-held ideas of what sells, such as Wonder Woman and Get Out crushed it at the box office and in awards season. And we got to see a solar eclipse.
So, you know. It was a pretty big year. And yes, it would be easy to focus on the “L’s” we took, but what’s the good in that? The New Year we’re presented with is an opportunity. Let’s regroup and fight like hell to make this year better than the year before it. I’m calling it now: the mood for 2018 is ambitious optimism. Let’s go out there and kick ass.
I’ll be back on Friday with some more in-depth analysis of the week’s news. In the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter at @allisonamandaxx.
Also, in borrowing a page from one of my favorite podcasts, Gilmore Guys, I’ve decided to treat y’all to a “pop culture plug” each week, where I let y’all know what I’ve been watching/listening to/otherwise enjoying so maybe you can enjoy it too! This week’s plug is FOX’s Brooklyn 99. I’ve been binging, but I’m only on season three of five– no spoilers! Now, go forth and be news-savvy. I’ll see you on Friday.
